A global pandemic and a devastating flood have widened gaps and created new needs like never before in Midland County. We are in the middle of history. It's hard to know what to do. Where to go. How to help.
These two hurdles have left, and continue to leave, an impact but for those in the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) population, this time is especially daunting, and potentially devastating.
As the flood waters and numbers of COVID-19 cases fall, the needs will rise. But we can be ready. For 100 years, United Way of Midland County has existed to unite people to improve lives, and we aren't stopping now. We're leaning in. We're stepping up in a new way.
The Rise Together Fund is designed to help equip the ALICE population like never before. A generous donation of $500,000 from The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation has contributed to the initial establishment of this fund. The Foundation has also committed an additional $500,000 in matching grant support. Gifts will be matched dollar for dollar (up to $500,000 total), doubling efforts to help positively impact ALICE.
One out of three families in our own backyard are ALICE or below. This fund will provide resources to help our community stand up in the wake of devastation. This fund will make a difference in people's lives by helping meet basic needs and providing long-term solutions.
